Hello! I'm Amber Stephens, M.Ed.
I know that all students and families have Great Ambitions for the future, and I'm here to help.
With more than 15 years in education, I have a proven track record of success in working with middle and high school students and families. Since 2012 I've served as a College & Career Specialist at a large, comprehensive public high school in Houston, Texas, where I have worked with countless students to help them achieve their post-secondary goals.
Experienced in:
course planning
standardized testing
college research
applications
financial aid
scholarships
and much more
I look forward to assisting families and students navigate through high school and into a great academic and financial fit for their post-secondary goals.
My parents are small business owners, who valued education and supported me in earning my bachelor's degree.
I am a first-generation college graduate.
I've been married to fellow educator and multi-sport coach Jud Stephens since 2006.
We moved to Texas from Michigan in 2007 but take every chance we can get to visit our home state and families there.
I completed my bachelor's degree in Michigan at Grand Valley State University, with a major in English, a minor in health, and a certification in secondary education.
My first full-time teaching job was at a middle school in Yuma, Arizona.
I began working at one of the largest school districts in Texas in the fall of 2007, where my first role was as an English III teacher.
I later transitioned to teaching English to emerging bilingual students.
During my last two years in the classroom, I was involved in a pilot program for at-risk freshman and sophomore students, where I both taught face-to-face and managed an online learning management program.
I completed my master's in educational administration from Sam Houston State University in 2011
In the fall of 2012, I established the role of College & Career Specialist at my large, comprehensive public high school
Through my work as a College & Career Specialist, I've served in the following capacities:
Co-chair of the Houston National STEM fair
Presenter for the Rice University School of continuing education
Member of the Houston local advisory committee for the NACAC national conference
Co-founder of the TACAC Special Interest Group for High School College Advisors
I love high school sports and working with athletes
In my free time, I enjoy road trips, trying new recipes, and artistic endeavors, and including a new watercolor hobby.
I support my public library with my voracious audiobook habit, through which I primarily listen to fiction, memoirs, and literary non-fiction.
I love television dramas but have been known to watch the occasional outdoor adventure show, where I get my fill of camping by watching others.
